DUTCH MEN CAPTURE TEAM TITLE AT WDF WORLD CUP
After Berry van Peer's gold medal in the singles tournament, the Dutch men's team also secured the overall victory at the WDF World Cup in Esbjerg, Denmark. Besides Van Peer, Wesley Plaisier, Ryan de Vreede and Jelle Klaasen were also on this team.
In this team event, a team of four men competes against a team from another country. A team member from one country takes turns playing a leg against a team member from another country.
In the final, the Netherlands faced the English team, consisting of Scott Mitchell, James Hurrell, Reece Colley and Jamie Atkins. In the early stages, England led 3-1, then Plaisier and Van Peer brought the score to 3-3. Mitchell won the seventh leg from De Vreede, but then the Netherlands punched a hole. Klaasen (twice), Van Peer and De Vreede won their next legs, which suddenly put the Netherlands in the lead 7-4. England then managed to narrow the gap to 8-7, but then Plaisier secured the decisive point for the Dutch team.
In the ladies, the team title surprisingly went to Ireland. Katie Sheldon, Robyn Byrne, Aoife McCormack and Caroline Breen won 9-7 over Leanne Topper, Rhian O'Sullivan, Alannah Waters-Evans and Eve Watson from Wales in the final. The Welsh players had earlier caused a surprise by beating England (Beau Greaves, Deta Hedman, Claire Brookin and Lorraine Winstanley).
